Faults and AlarmsAlarms Display

Faults detection and alarms display is the main part of Downtime Reduction School training. This is crush course and a main part of the Downtime Reduction Methodology. From the image above you can a control system room with HMI and SCADA screens. The top screen displays a process, all components and devices, as well as their states. An actual graphic style and color are taken from DCS — Distributed Control System. Students will learn how to properly display different element of the process and instrumentation screen.

Several rules about faults detection and alarms display

All faults and alarms must have the following indicators on the screen::

  1. Proper description of an alarm or fault
  2. Their physical location in accordance with P&ID and tags (as used in the plant)
  3. PLC or HMI/SCADA address, discrete and analog
  4. Analog values must be displayed as registers in engineering formats, such as meter, lb, kg, m/sec, gal/min — in accordance with the plant preference
  5. Discrete components, such as switches, push-buttons, valves, gates, conductors, overload relays, inputs and outputs must have bit addresses
  6. All inputs and outputs and alarms must be displayed in the following colors, as shown on below example:
